A S
atisfactory (C)
paper:
· Meets the primary requirements of the assignment (length, etc.), including the topic, deadlines, format, and length
· Has an acceptable thesis statement in the intro paragraph that contains the author and/or title.
· Has basic body paragraph organization, with citations if required and a final concluding paragraph.
· MLA formatting may need some improvement, but in-text citations and sources from the alphabetical list on the Works Cited page correlate and are appropriate.
· Student has not used first person (“I”) or second person (“you”) in the essay.
· Paper may have some grammar, spelling, and sentence structure errors that do not interfere significantly with readability and understanding.
An
Above Average (B)
paper:
· Meets the above requirements, with paragraphs that consistently refer to the main idea of the Thesis Statement (which is also correctly placed as the last sentence of the intro paragraph) and have good transitions. Diction and vocabulary are mature and collegiate.
· Sentences and paragraph structure are well-developed, organized and parallel. Topic Sentences and Commentary in each paragraph reflect the main point of the paragraph’s relevance to the thesis/argument.
· The Introduction and Conclusion effectively introduce and summarize the argument. The student’s title contains the literary title.
· The primary and secondary sources, if required, are cited in each of the body paragraphs as examples and evidence to support the thesis/argument.
· Quotes are relevant to the argument and are from scholarly, academic journals (where secondary sources are required).
· Critical thinking and analysis is evident and literary terms are used to convey the main ideas.
· Most MLA formatting is correct, but there may be minor errors. There may be enough minor errors to prevent the paper from being “Excellent.” A major error in any area can also prevent the “Above Average” grade. A “B” will have at least one more than the minimum required no. of sources or page numbers. (In the case of the Literary Essay, it must be to the bottom of p.3.)
An
Excellent (A)
paper,
in addition to the above criteria for a “B,” has excellent transitions that connect the evidence to form a mature, collegiate-level argument that is based upon literary analysis and uses literary terminology. It will be imaginative and have fresh insights.
“A” papers will have
at least one more of each sources and page numbers than the minimum required.
[The number and degree of errors determines whether the letter grade is high (+) or low (-).]
